Record high remains 22.3... One source of comfort is that most everyone on the IS forum struggles to break 20, which I’ve been under only once ever. But smiles per gallon: BIGLY.

I once managed 26mpg in the LS430 on a long highway drive. Once. Don’t think I could drive that slowly again.

Around the rural roads I’m getting 16-19.

That is... not as good as a car that size should get.

My car is a foot longer and a good 400lbs heavier and manages 20/32 city/highway with the same type of engine. Surely such a yuuuuge economy difference can’t be attributed to the engine alone?

Kinja'd!!! Dr. Zoidberg - RIP Oppo > If only EssExTee could be so grossly incandescent

Kinja'd!!!4

Wrong. It’s pretty much EXACTLY because of the 2JZ-GE mated to a torque-geared 5 speed slushbox. 70 mph is at 3300rpm or so.

That’s really pretty good. I usually only got 23-24 mixed in the 2.3 MZR Mazda 3. Our Civic before that was a gutless wonder and still only got 26-27 mixed. Don’t even ask about the WRX... basically it will drink as much gas as you want to give it. The only car I’ve ever owned that routinely got over 30 in normal mixed driving was an 86 Civic hatch and it had a whopping 12 hp and only weighed about 175 lbs. I’m convinced that 98.4% of folks that claim amazing mpg figures are BSing.

That’s painful. Even with really short drives where my FoST never warms up it usually gets better than this (and it has more hp/torque). Then again, my wife’s Mazda3 only gets 21-24 mpg, even with longer-distance commuting (and your IS300 has about as much more hp/torque than her car as mine has more than yours).

How does this car get such poor mileage?

My E46 sedan, 328I manual, rarely gets more than 21.5 mpg on my commute, assuming I don’t drive it too hard.

It just surprises me how much technology has come along these days. My new F150 2.7L gets me over 22 mpg on the same commute, while being faster from 0-60 by almost a full second (5.8 sec vs 6.7 sec).

Then again, an aluminum-bodied 2.7L DOHC twin turbo, direct & port injected, with 325 hp / 400 ft-lbs torque and 10-speed auto is not something you would have associated with a fullsize truck back then, or even today.

I have a car with a V8 that gets similar fuel economy. Possibly better. Beyond this, that car makes more power than yours (almost the same as my FoST, but slightly heavier).

My 96 DX got 36-40 MPGs, dropping to 32 in winter. I never realized I would never sniff those numbers again in any car.

People don’t believe me in my groups, either. I’m notorious for my really excellent fuel economy even when I’m driving with them at the same speeds...

Here’s what my fuel economy has looked like recently (Driving in heavy traffic and really short runs. Aug 12 was after a rally to Leavenworth with others in similar cars to mine, and one of the other higher ones was after the Seattle Oppo cruise.):

Kinja'd!!!

Here’s what it looked like when I lived in a rural area with minimal traffic most of the time, in spite of my car really never warming up during my commute:

Kinja'd!!!

Most people claim they can barely get 22mpg on their commutes...

I also just noticed that I’ve been driving so little that my car hasn’t been filled since late November. Crazy.

But my V8 car is older than your IS. Built in 1999 and sold in January of 2000.

To be fair to those non-believers, even on Oppo we had many many many posts about awful MPGs for FoST owners.

Ouch, man that’s high for an overdrive gear. Pretty sure EssExTee like me has an e39 but I’m up 2 cylinders and see the promise land of 22 mpg regularly in an auto zf 5 speed.

Could it be winter blend right now? Though not sure that’s a thing in Washington. Do you think if you took more country/4 lane highway (45-55mph) you could hit that 25 mpg?

I do believe them on that, but it’s clearly possible to get decent fuel economy out of one. I don’t think anyone could have thought I was terribly conservative on the cruise when in the twisties...

Is this mostly city driving? My ZHP does ~25 average with mostly highway, but alot of cold engine city now that I have to take my daughter to daycare. In pure highway I regularly do 27-28 and my best tank is 30. City driving is around 22 most of the time.

I think being an auto you’re always going to struggle getting great mileage. Our 2.0 Mazda3 stick gets average 31 mpg mixed and my 135i gets 23-25 mixed (albeit its moderately tuned to be about 400hp at the wheels). Perhaps I just don’t drive hard enough

Oh, I thought yours was a manual. That explains it. Like you, I have a close range box with no overdrive. 70mph is somewhere around 2800rpm. I can only hit 30mpg if I’m going 50-6o on the highway which nobody here does. My real world highway econ ends up being 28ish.

That seems absurdly low for what it is. Did they design it with a 7th injector that just sprays gas directly on the pavement?

Kinja'd!!! Eric @ opposite-lock.com > AestheticsInMotion
01/07/2018 at 09:16

Kinja'd!!!0

That is definitely surprising. It looks like something that should do 25-30 even if you drive it aggressively.

Then again, that means 22.5-27 on E10. We’re all suffering losses in fuel economy in older cars due to that change. It has long made me wonder what would happen on E0, but it isn’t available in enough places to test it.

Oh, Fuelly is cruel. It shows that stat right on your car’s home page, so you see it when adding a fuel log.

Kinja'd!!!

The best is off, it was actually higher and closer to the dash reading. Trying to get to an even number and missing. My fuel economy is awful in cold weather, on short trips, and on snow tires, so the next one will be truly painful.

When you’re in stop and go traffic, you can actually see the needle drop. When you’re going slightly above the speed limit on the freeway, you can REALLY see the needle drop.

This makes me feel pretty good about my STi mileage then! I get similar mileage, depending on how much canyon carving ive done. All highway at 85mph I have seen 21mpg, all canyons I have seen 17mpg, regularly end up with about 19. Gas is so affordable though that its all irrelevant. I imagine I will sing a different tune when premium goes towards $5 again though.
